And here we are looking across the wide Strait of Van de Fuca. This part of the Puget Sound leads to the open Pacific
and eventually to Japan for those interested in a long swim. The water is unfortunately rather cold since it streams from Alaska. In the background
you'll see the Olympic Mountains - a mountain chain found on guess-what-its-name-is penninsula. Even though we are only about 60 miles or so
north of Seattle, this area usually stays surprisingly dry. The effect is called a rain shadow, which basically means the Olympics block the
winter clouds and rain more so than they do in Seattle.
